.ad domains belong to the Principality of Andorra, a sovereign microstate located in the Pyrenees, between Spain and France.
It is an extension that has been managed since its launch (January 1996) by the Servei de Telecomunicacions d'Andorra through Andorra Telecom. Until 2024, it was a fairly exclusive domain (Andorra has a population of less than 80,000 people), as it could only be registered by residents of Andorra. For individuals (for non-commercial purposes), there was the .nom.ad domain, while .ad domains were exclusively for applicants who were holders or exclusive licensees of a registered trademark in Andorra, or holders of a registered trade name in Andorra. This changed recently because since May 22, 2024, .ad domains have been released in several launch phases, allowing any company or individual to register .ad domains regardless of their country of residence.
As of October 22, 2024, .ad domains can be registered by anyone, regardless of their place of residence. In addition, they now come with a lower price.
Andorra, officially the Principality of Andorra (in Catalan: Principat d'Andorra), is a sovereign landlocked microstate located on the Iberian Peninsula in the eastern Pyrenees, bordering France to the north and Spain to the south. It is believed to have been created by Charlemagne, and it was ruled by the Count of Urgell until the year 988, when it was transferred to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Urgell. The current principality was formed through a charter in 1278. It is known as a principality because it is a diarchy ruled by two princes: the Bishop of Urgell in Catalonia, Spain, and the President of the French Republic.
Andorra is the sixth smallest nation in Europe, with an area of 468 square kilometers and a population of approximately 77,000 people. The Andorrans are a Romani-Catalan ethnic group. Andorra is the sixteenth smallest country in the world by land area and the eleventh smallest by population. Its capital, Andorra la Vella, is the highest capital city in Europe, at an altitude of 1,023 meters above sea level. The official language is Catalan, but Spanish, Portuguese, and French are also spoken.
